Having access to another airport in which to operate your routes requires you to lease a gate (or, when your finances are sufficiently strong later in the game and you must expand beyond the current allotment, you may build a terminal).

A lease represents a month-to-month commitment by your airline to utilize at least one slot available for the gate, and further obligates your airline to pay for the entirety of the gate regardless of your utilization.

Once you have decided on a world in which to play (see the [[Introduction to the game worlds]] page for more details), in general, you will be granted (1) a sum of cash, (2) gates to operate at a single airport, and (3) a choice of leased aircraft as listed below.

SIM3:
ATR-42-400
Bombardier Q300

SIM4:
CRJ-100
Saab 2000

To start a new airline - or access your existing airlines - go the to [http://www.airlineempires.org/index.php?app=ae My Airlines page]. Each playable world will be listed below with summary information on current number of airlines, progress in the game, etc. Simply enter the name of your desired new airline in the provided textbox and click "Enter World".

Airline creation will take you step by step through establishing your airline, including selection of airplanes as shown above and location of your initial gate agreements. Note that the textbox next to the airports dropdown acts as a filter and not a direct selection of your desired airport, so please ensure that an airport is selected in the dropdown before proceeding.

Congratulations! You have launched your new airline. Now proceed to investigate your first route by leasing a gate at another airport (see the [[Leasing gates]] section).

Having started your airline, your first act of CEO is to manage your costs. Of note, by negotiating leases with airplane manufacturers and with airports, you have created on-going monthly liabilities, so spend your initial cash wisely.

Airline Empires has been continuously developed and modified since 2004, the development of which has branched into different versions of the game. This section is divided up into whether or not the versions are supported, i.e. receive active development effort, have live games, etc.

== Unsupported Versions ==

* SIM1: Sim 1 is the oldest version of AE, it is also the first one to be created. Sim 1 has no support and does not get any new features since the application resides on separate servers that are not accessible by AE programming staff. This is one of the two sims that run a real life production game with start and end dates.

* SIM2: Sim 2 is a almost stand still version with very little bugs and very little new features. It does have some support however and, unlike sim 1, it does not run a real life production system.

* SIM2 BETA: Sim 2 Beta is the newest and most advanced game. It has lots of support, more features and runs a real life production game. There are multiple bugs so it is reset more frequently than any other sim but it does go faster and allows faster growth. Upon becoming a release candidate, this version is referred to as SIM4.

== Current Versions ==

* SIM3: Sim 3 is a competitive and fast stand still game. There are little to no bugs and runs a 1 - 10 year game. It has some support but never gets any new features.

* SIM4:
